A desperate, all-consuming yearning has been powering New Translations. The feeling has always been present in their music — a swooning mix of aqueous synth-pop and gauzy alt-rock that feels both intimate and infinite — but things have been changing for the band since they let out the escapist fantasia of their 2025 debut album Vacation. At home, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter, FLOOD, and The Tennessean have all placed the Nashville quintet at the forefront of an insurgent non-country Music City scene. And on the road, they’ve been playing bigger stages than ever, including Bonnaroo and a tour with Rainbow Kitten Surprise. They even went full circle during CMA Fest, making headlines by playing a counterprogrammed JBJ’s rock takeover. But at the stakes have raised, the longing has deepened, and New Translations have been locked in with genre-blurring producer Yves Rothman (Blondshell, FKA Twigs, Girlpool), exploring sonic horizons that double down on their favored sounds (glassine synths, post-punk basslines, sternum-rattling tom rolls) while introducing bold new ones, like dazed dream-rock, towering sophistipop, and the stormy dynamics of shoegaze. Meanwhile, vocalist Oliver Pierce sings with the irrepressible emotions that come when the thing you want most is in sight, but not quite tangible — that “eternal reach,” as he puts it. “I hope to one day reach a point where I'm settled,” he adds. “But right now, I’m chewing the bark off the trees and howling at the moon.”
